It has taken me about a year and a half to decide to leave my current position at Union SD. After 6 and a half years, my last day is 01/23/26.
Some background: I am the person to whom all of my mom’s care issues come. She is in hospice and in a memory care facility, and while that takes a huge load off of my hands, I am the one checking in on her daily, bringing her favorite Japanese snacks, and dealing with all the paperwork and decisions regarding her care. On top of all this, I was leading some big initiaves at work – including AI Instruction, STEAM integration, media balance, and thoughtful technology use in the classroom. Being the only ed-tech person (as well as leading the staffed IT side) required a lot of reflection, consideration, time, energy, and coordination.
I truly loved my job at Union, especially my team, the students, and so many amazing principals/asst. principials, and dedicated teachers. I realized finally that I need a change, some work-life balance, and to put myself first right now. It was a stressful, nerve-wracking decision… but it is done. I will update soon with upcoming changes, but right now, I want to say, like Truman, “If I don’t see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night.”
